Brian Tovar is an lighting designer based in New York City. In 2008, his NYC premier design for Jeremy Bloom’s THE WENDY COMPLEX (MITF), earned him an Outstanding Lighting Design Award at the age of 21, shortly followed by the critically acclaimed productions of PEREZ HILTON SAVES THE UNIVERSE (Fringe Best Musical 2008) leading Brian into a career focused extensively on new works in and around New York City.
Brian has designed lighting for World and NYC Premieres of over 50 productions including Nick Balemire's SOON (Signature Theatre) directed by Matthew Gardiner, Michael Mitnick’s ED DOWNLOADED (Denver Center Theater) and SLEEPING ROUGH (Page73), both directed by Tony-Nominated Director Sam Buntrock. A frequent collaborator with Ars Nova, Brian has designed the lighting for World Premier Productions of THE LAPSBURGH LAYOVER, directed by Oliver Butler, EAGER TO LOSE and the, THE WILDNESS, by Kyle Jarrow and Lauren Worsham.
Brian’s design for the critically acclaimed production of TAMAR OF THE RIVER (Prospect Theatre Company), directed by Daniel Goldstein earned him a 2014 Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding Lighting Design, was helmed by THE NEW YORK TIMES as “Flawless,” and was featured in the October, 2013 issue of LIVE DESIGN. Brian's regional credits include, Goodspeed Musicals, Signature Theatre, Denver Center Theatre, Two River Theatre, Northern Stage, ReVision Theatre and Flat Rock Playhouse.
In addition to Brian’s theatrical work, in 2013 he formed Ionic Design Group, a multi-disciplined design and production company specializing in visual story telling and emerging technology. Known for his convergence of theatrical and event design, Brian leads a team of designers and artists focusing on the integration of theatrical craft in the cooperate entertainment industry. Brian has designed events for high profile clients including: BRAVO, PORSCHE, CITIBANK, REMY MARTIN, VEVO, SAMSUNG, THE WALKING DEAD, MONSTER, BIG BUCK HUNT, MASHABLE, JAGUAR, NFL and NIKE. Brian also designs the lighting annually for various shows at NEW YORK FASHION WEEK, NYCLU BROADWAY STANDS UP FOR FREEDOM, THE BROADWAY BEAUTY PAGEANT and THE YOUNG CHOREOGRAPHERS FESTIVAL.
2013 marked Brian's first producing credit on the short film RECURSION starring Tony nominee Rob McCLure, written by Stanton Nash and directed by Sam Buntrock. Recursion has been selected at over 30 film festival across the US and has taken home over 14 awards.
